STRONG ELECTRIC PITCH TRIM.pilot report

Nat Puffer`s pilot report on The STRONG ELECTRIC PITCH TRIM Sun n` Fun `97,News letter #57 "I also took the opportunity to install Alex`s Strong electric pitch trim.it was easy to install and seems to be well designed. It has more authority than the spring pitch trim,so it seems to cover a wider range of c.g.s.My only reservation to date is that I have experienced a little binding, which we think is due to the pivot being to tight, and is easily correctable. Our trip to Florida should give it a good work out." News letter#58"The Electric trim works well. The binding we reported earlier was solved by loosening the pivot. The electric trim has more authority than the trim shown in the plans, which means it can cover a greater range of front seat loads and speed. The plans trim system has a handle which indicates the trim setting at all times. With electric trim there is no indication in the cockpit, however, you only need to know the trim setting when you are on the ground before take off,and all have to do is look at the elevator position. In the air you dont really care about the setting, because you use the trim as required to take pressure off the stick"

COZY NEWS LETTER #59

News letter # 59 We had one of the first installation of Alex Strong's Electric Pitch Trim, which we were evaluating for builders. It worked fine in Arizona in the spring, but when we were flying across the northern states from Washington to Oshkosh at high altitude where it was cold, it stalled out on us and we could not adjust it to cruise after climbing to altitude. We called Alex and told him about this, and he offered to fly to Oshkosh to replace the unit with one that had a finer thread on the lead screw. We told him it wasn't necessary, just send it to us and we would replace it. He did, but we decided to wait until we got home. In the meantime, Alex found a more powerful motor, which he sent to us at no cost, so we installed the new motor in the new unit and it has worked just fine since then. We were very impressed with Alex's design and support, and highly recommend his unit. (There were 20 units already purchased at this time, all were upgraded at no cost to the buyer…Alex) *** We are now listed as an authorized vendor by Nat Puffer "http://www.cozyaircraft.com/" MKIV N ,SPT# 003

PILOT REPORT

"Hello E-Group, I just received my Strong Electric Pitch Trim system yesterday. It is a small and simple little unit that has the look of airplane hardware. Not bad for a few dollars more than a single MAC servo motor! I was originally concerned that there wasn't a trim position indicator. But as the documentation supplied with the trim unit mentions; the only time a person needs a position indication is before take-off. The rest of the time you just move the trim to take pressure from the stick. Simply marking the canard for a "hands -off", sitting- still elevator position should be adequate. Possibly two marks: one for solo and another for when both seats are occupied. At any rate, I think I made a very good purchase. Bruce Vinnola, E-Racer#109, SPT# 021

PILOT REPORT

I installed an electric roll trim system in my plane when I built it. In hindsight (after 80 hours of flying) I wouldn't bother. It is used so infrequently that it is not worth the expense. The electric pitch trim on the otherhand (I have a Strong unit) is worth its weight in gold. I wouldn't have it any other way. Mark Beduhn Cozy IV N494CZ, SPT#029

PILOT REPORT

"The Strong Electric Pitch Trim was easy enough to install. This is a very nice mod for any of the EZ series. After three takeoffs and landings; with a little cruising included; it is my pleasure to report that I wouldn't go back to the manual trim. The Strong trim system takes up less room forward of the panel. I tucked it in on the right side and installed a momentary switch on the panel just a few inches away from the throttle lever. A coolie hat switch on the control stick would be nice but I already have my push-to-talk button there. What I like best about the system is the greatly increased range of authority over the springs. Before when I flew solo I would run out of down trim at full throttle. The canard generated more lift than the springs could hold back. On the other end of the scale, when I carried a 200# passenger I didn't have quite enough nose up trim. This all occurs with the elevators in trail. I'm not overly concerned about the motor failing. "Only you and pilots that have installed your trim mech. can know just how well it operates. I have NEVER been able to "nail the numbers"on climbs, decents and landings so effortless." John Mason Dragonfly N142JE

Oct.23,1998, On the way to Dakar, Africa. "The new STRONG pitch trim is a delight to operate and I am glad I did install it. I now have a little more room at my left as well as the comfort to select the trim electrically which is a big improvement." H.G.Schmid

Nov.10,1998 Crossing the Atlantic,Dakar,Africa to Recife,Brazil."I was glad during initial climb out to have installed the STRONG electric pitch trim which already on the way to Dakar had proven its usefulness. It now was so easy to trim the heavy aircraft very precisely and I was sorry not to have installed the system earlier." H.G.SCHMID LONG EZ HB-YCT

On June 26 1999 a saturday, First Flight. After 2 taxi test I was ready for the " big one".I taxied out to the centerline, applied power and was off,at about 80k I lifted the nose and started to fly, after the customary bob I established a ascent of what I thought was 110k and started downwind, having previosly flown a C172 for bi-annual it was interesting to see a 140mph at the start of my downwind. Before I could plan anything I was in position to start my landing.I trimmed out the plane for 85k(thank goodness for the Strong elevator trim)proceeded to get back on the centerline, this thing moves fast, lower the belly board and set up the landing. When my spotter on the ground told men I was about 10 feet in the air I started a gentle flare and Bingo I was on the ground,I lifted the nose for better braking and proceeded to the hangar, where the first one to greet me at the plane was my DOG(People are scarce here in Wyoming).
